If you've heard me talk funny, you probably know I'm not from around here. I was born in Melbourne, Australia and lived there for 34 years before transplanting across the ocean to Colorado in 2007. A lot of people have told me, and I find it difficult to argue that I "landed in the right place". People are friendly, the scenery is breathtaking and Denver is similar in size and attitude to my hometown.
My start in radio was unusual to say the least - I was playing in bands and studying sound production in the late 90s and one Monday night driving home I found a comedy radio station on the dial. My curiosity was piqued and the next day I called to see if I could go in and take a look at how a radio station worked. The station manager happened to answer the phone and he said "Sure, why don't you come in Thursday afternoon. Oh, and by the way we have an opening on air on Saturday if you're interested." So, 5 days after I first decided I was interested in seeing a radio station, I was on air!
I spent the next few years learning everything I could, adding sales and programming skills to my terrible on-air skills, before moving to talk radio when the comedy station folded, expanding my experience running a board for the on-air talent at 3AK. About year later, 3AK went broke, closed its doors, and leased its radio license to a Sports Talk station. They took me on as a panel operator and soon after gave me a chance to work at audio imaging (making promos, highlight packages and some commercials) as well.
In 2006 I met a girl from Colorado and over time we grew more attached to each other and eventually I moved here permanently. The girl and I didn't work out in the end, but I applied for a job in mid 2008 with KBCO. The job was part audio production and part website work, and although I didn't know much about websites and graphics at the time, I worked hard to learn about them and for some reason, Scott Arbough decided to give me a chance.
I'm still here (so I guess I've managed to repay the faith that got me the job in the first place) keeping up the website and helping out with KBCO Studio C. I hosted the KBCO Groove Show on Saturday nights for the better part of 3 years and now if you're up early enough on a Saturday morning you can hear my funny accent between 6am and 9am on 97.3 KBCO. It's been an amazing ride so far, and I'm hoping it continues for a long time yet!
